<< Meiji Period 1868-1912 >>
The Meiji period was a time of transition and crisis.
The old
traditional form of Ukiyo-e had come to an end after 1900 -
not because of a lack of talented artists,
but due to a lack of demand from the public.
Ukiyo-e was replaced by photography.
After 1900 the majority of the woodblock artists worked
as illustrators for newspapers, magazines and book publishers.
The outstanding artist of the Meiji period was
Yoshitoshi.
His sometimes obscure prints are like a last roaring of
traditional ukiyo-e
values and at the same time a testimony of an extremely
high level of skill of the art of woodblock printmaking.
